Porcelain is fired hotter than stoneware from a finer clay, which is why it can be made this thin while staying strong. The thin rim is a large part of why it is pleasant to drink from.

Care
Dishwasher safe. Avoid the microwave if the piece carries a metallic band, and store with space between the handles - chips on fine china nearly always happen in the cupboard rather than in use.
